I became a college teacher because I couldn’t think of anything else to do. To confess that your professional life has been based on a failure of imagination is neither so embarrassing nor so unusual as it might seem. Give truth serum (or three or four whiskeys) to any college faculty and you will see what I mean. If you are an administrator and a teacher tells you that he does his job because he wants to “help”, to “improve” his students, fire that teacher on the spot. He is either lying, or a fool, both sane grounds for dismissal. A teacher does his job because sometimes, against all odds, remarkable and unexpected circumstances occur, even in universities.
