Kelly’s Depot/Union Depot

union depotKelly’s Depot is adjacent to the newly renovated Union Depot in Downtown St. Paul. It is what hipsters would call a dive bar. Better people will recognize it as a bar. Stop in for a reasonably priced whiskey, maybe two, while you ponder the utterly ridiculous 600,000 piece Lite-Brite stunt taking place next door. Meant to kick off a competition where-in the winner is awarded one million dollars to implement their idea for bettering St. Paul, the Lite-Brite mural will be on display until the 28th of February.
Best to stop at the second whiskey because the third will make you question, hopefully curse, the 300 volunteer hours pumped into a Lite-Brite mural meant to stimulate public interest and input about civic improvements. 300 hours is a lot of shoe leather.

“The basic project of art is always to make the world whole and comprehensible, to restore it to us in all its glory and its occasional nastiness, not through argument but through feeling, and then to close the gap between you and everything that is not you, and in this way pass from feeling to meaning. It’s not something that committees can do. It’s not a task achieved by groups or by movements. It’s done by individuals, each person mediating in some way between a sense of history and an experience of the world.”

Robert Hughes, The Shock of the New
